Duty of care defintion-The responsibility or the legal obligation of a person or organization to avoid acts or omissions (which can be reasonably foreseen) to be likely to cause harm to others.
What this definition means is that duty of care is when someone has a responsibility about something or someone. In our case, mass media has a duty of care among all the people in the country or world. Depending on what they say, people are going to think one way or another, so they need to be very careful while explaining something. Journalists have an enormous duty of care. They need to be careful when saying anything, a really small mistake can cause lots of damage to the channel.
First of all, Media needs to convince us that we can trust them. They need to show us that they are not biased. How can they show that? Well, one way for us to see if the news are being biased is to look at the same event in different channels. Like that we can see how do they explain it.
Both of us made a speech and took a place in order to give our opinions. Matias speech:
Hello ladies and gentlemen, thank you for giving me your attention and being with me this afternoon. First of all i want to present myself with you all. My name is Matias Alvarez and today i wanted to share my opinion about how should media communicate and how should they give us the right information and why. Well since my point of view i think that each media should have an ethical and moral part, because they should not be able to say whatever they want and the way they want, although they are private companies and the owner has the total power over what he wants to express. There are only 6 companies that control approximately 90% of all the media worldwide. Imagine if they wanted to fill us will wrong information only telling one side of the story. They would be following us because it would be real difficult to get the correct and real information. Specially because they can change and make you interpret the text differently. Things that can change the text are censorship, sensationalism and bias. Bias is when they favor a point of view or person. Censorship is when they only tell you one side of the story. last of all comes sensationalism is when they make the text real attractive and exaggerated. So i really do ask these companies that provides us with information for them to have responsibility with what they are saying, because we are always looking forward to an article that is telling the truth for us to have our opinion and to see what side to take. The newspapers are their to tell us the truth not to persuade us and to manipulate our thoughts. It was an honour to give my speech of my personal opinion in front of you all. It was a pleasure to have you as audience. Thank you for giving me these few minutes and hoped i transmitted something to you. Nicolas speech: Hello everyone, thank you for being here. I am really concerned about what is going on with the media nowadays. Media is owned by a very small group of people. This people do what they want with it and do not give information the way they should. Media has an enormous responsibility in our society. They are in charged of telling everyone in the world what is happening around us. Mass media’s job seems very easy: something important which might interest lots of people happens and journalists go there and explain it. But apparently, for them, it is not as easy. Why? Because people who work at the media just focus on their personal good. This is the reason why media owners need to stop thinking on their money and start thinking on citizens who deserve knowing the whole truth about things. Media owners need to have some limitations and rules. The government should tell them that if they want to keep telling the news to the country they need to say the WHOLE truth. If they disagree, and keep saying whatever they want to to try to change the way citizens think they should be banned and punished. Nowadays, information is being destroyed, some news are being censored and others are being explained with “little” changes which do not seem important, but trust me, they are. A little change can really affect the way we see things. It is not the same thing saying that I broke a leg playing soccer than saying I broke a leg playing soccer with Peter. As you can see, people will think that it is Peter’s fault or that Peter had something to do with it. As a citizen of the world,I would like to tell everyone that this has to stop. We, citizens, have the right to know everything that happens around us. We can not let a really small group of people control and change the way we think. It is the government’s duty as the representant of its citizens to tell the media to stop censoring, destroying or changing information for their personal good. It is time to reveal and ensure a better future for our country. Thank you and goodnight. Here is the fiscal video of the speech: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1d6aAHIdJKI
In conclusion, mass media needs to be very careful when saying things, as we said before, a little mistake can cause lots of damage. They also need to be sure that they are explaining nothing but the truth. It is their responsibility to tell us the news the exact way they happened.
